How to Install Filters on an In-Home Air HVAC

Without a heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) filter, your HVAC unit would be susceptible to a whole range of problems. Dust, pollen and dander would collect on the internal components of the HVAC unit, which could cause significant damage to the unit. The parts most likely to be damaged would be the blower fan and the evaporator coil. Once clogged, airflow would be significantly reduced and the unit could fail. Cleaning these parts can lead to a hefty repair bill. Installing and replacing an HVAC filter as needed is easy. It will keep your HVAC unit clean for many years. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power to the HVAC unit. Turning the thermostat off should take care of this.

    • 2

Locate where your HVAC filter is on your HVAC unit. Usually it is located on the side of the unit where the return air duct connects. Check to see if there is an existing filter in there. Sometimes you will need to use a screwdriver to remove an access panel to get to the filter.

    • 3

If there is an existing filter in there, check to see if it is dirty. Hold it up to the light, and if it looks dark or dusty, it needs to be replaced. Clean filters are white and don't have a build up of dirt.

    • 4

Check the size of the filter. The size is printed on the edge of the filter. Filters are sized with three numbers (e.g., 20---25---1). These dimensions are in inches. If no filter exists, use a tape measure and measure the three dimensions of the opening (height, length, and width).

    • 5

Purchase a filter at your local hardware or home improvement store. Ensure the size you purchase is the right one.

    • 6

Slide the new filter into the slot on your HVAC unit. The arrows on the filter need to point toward the HVAC unit. The arrows point in the direction of the airflow, and air flows through the filter into the HVAC unit.

    • 7

If you had to remove an access door, replace it. Turn the power back on to the HVAC unit.

Tips & Warnings

  • Filters need to be changed every 90 days. If the HVAC unit experiences heavy usage, or if you have pets, it will need to be changed more frequently.

  • The power needs to be off to the HVAC unit when replacing the filter. If the unit is running, the filter could be sucked into the unit when you try to pull it out. This could cause significant damage to your blower fan and/or HVAC unit.
