Computer-based Training (CBT) can define any form of educational or instructional material accessible or designed for use on a computer. Computer-based Training is convenient, easier to keep updated and more effective than simple printed material, but also, depending on the design, can give the developer or administrator the ability to track who has completed the training. While developing computer-based training will become easier the more you do it, the initial costs to obtain the necessary software and licenses can be expensive.

Creating Computer-Based Training

  • Acquire computer-based training software. Because of the rapid rise in popularity combined with the drastic fall in the requirement for computer programming skills, there are quite a few computer-based training software suites available for purchase. Taking your particular needs into consideration, you should research the capabilities of each of them. Many of the suites offer a free, limited-time trial, but be prepared that the functionality of the suites may be limited until you purchase the software.

  • Divide your training material into 20 to 30 minute segments. Computer-based training is most effective when you can maintain a sense of accomplishment in the participant. Lengthy online training sessions can have the same effect as lengthy instructor-led trainings, namely, the participants will become bored and lose focus. Seek to keep your information in small, graspable lessons. The participants' retention of the information will be higher.

  • Attempt to use two of the three methods of learning at all times -- visual, audible and kinesthetic. Provide pictures or visual examples of the topics or subjects being taught. Most CBT suites allow you to record narration along with visual elements. The more effective suites will allow you to create quizzes, games, challenges and other ways to check for the participants understanding and retention of the information they've learned. Strive to use all of these elements in every training module.

  • Publish the modules to removable or dedicated file storage. Computer-based training modules are large files. They will take up space on your hard drive and slow down your system very quickly. Saving and publishing these files to a dedicated hard drive or other digital storage drive will not only keep your computer running smoothly, but will also keep the training in one place.

  • Test all the computer-based training yourself. Check for spelling and other grammatical errors. Ensure that all graphics, videos, activities and narration are working properly. If you've included a quiz or test to check for understanding, make sure that the questions are clear and understandable and that the answers are correct. It's a good idea to have two or three other people test the training as well to catch mistakes you may have overlooked.

  • It's important to understand that computer-based training is not the same as web-based training, which is training delivered using the Internet. Web-based training has additional requirements that must be met in order to be used. Computer-based training does not require that the participant be connected to the Internet, only that they have access to a computer.
