How to Change a Document File Name

Whenever you create a new file, be it in the Windows or Mac OS X operating system, you have the option to give it a desired name or the name will be automatically assigned. Sooner or later there comes the time when you will need to change the document file name. This process is easy in either operating system and takes only a few mouse clicks. However, there are a few ways to do this.

Windows Operating System

  • Click on the file you want to rename, wait for a few seconds and then click on it again for the name to become editable. Type the new name and hit "Enter."

  • Right-click on the file you want to rename and select "Rename." Type the new file name and hit "Enter."

  • Open the folder where the file is located, click on "File" option in the folder's menu and select "Rename." Type the new name and hit "Enter."

Mac OS X

  • Click on the icon of the file you want to rename.

  • Click on the file name below the icon and hold the mouse button for a few seconds until the name becomes editable. Type the new name and hit "Enter."

  • Click on the file you want to rename and then hit "Enter." Type the new name and press "Enter" again.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure that you change the file name only and not the file extension, such as .doc, .txt, .pdf, etc.
