How to Apply Polyurethane Over Paint
Adding a coat of polyurethane sealer over paint adds an additional coat of protection to the surface. Polyurethane is often added to furniture, cabinets and wall murals. Polyurethane comes in both oil- and water-based finishes. It is best to apply an oil-based sealer over an oil-based latex paint, and water-based sealers over latex paint. The sealer comes in a variety of sheens from eggshell to high gloss. Remember to always have adequate ventilation and air flow when applying the finish. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Pour the polyurethane into a paint tray. Use a roller to apply the sealer to the surface. Use a small mini foam roller for sealing furniture and small items. A larger roller can be used for wall and ceiling surfaces. Use a two-inch paint brush for small, hard to reach areas, furniture or accessories.

Roll the sealer onto the surface quickly and evenly. Do not apply pressure to the roller when applying the polyurethane. Do not become alarmed if the surface has a milky, white haze--the sealer will clear as it dries. Avoid painting on humid days--the additional moisture in the air can become trapped underneath the sealer coat, causing hazing and blistering.

Wait 24 hours, or as directed by the manufacturer of the polyurethane, before applying additional coats. Add additional coats of paint for added protection. Do not clean the surface for 30 days to allow all coats of paint and sealer to cure.

Tips & Warnings
.
Always use proper safety precautions. Open all windows and circulate air. Have fans blowing in the paint area. However, make sure dust and debris will not touch the newly painted surfaces. Put on latex gloves to protect skin and hands from exposure to paint chemicals. Don a facial mask to prevent inhaling paint fumes.
Oil-based polyurethanes and sealers will yellow over time.
Dark surfaces painted black, brown or other deep colorations may show a slight cloudy haze if the finish is applied on too thick. There is no way to remove the finish once this occurs. Make sure to apply extremely light coats on dark colors.
