How to Determine the Size of Screws

Nails and screws are sized primarily in the same way. In fact, most sizing charts are used for both. Both nails and screws are used to fasten objects and are available in a range of types and sizes, each manufactured to provide a specific function.

1. Use the "penny" size to identify the length of the screw. The term "penny" is used to identify the length and size of a nail or screw. The most common penny designations are 2d, 3d, 4d, or 2-penny, 3-penny and 4-penny respectively; however, screws can also be as long as 60-penny.

2. Measure the length of the screw in mm starting from the tip of the nail to the head. The oval-head screw, which extends in a slight oval; the round-head screw, which protrudes in a half-circle; and the flat-head screw, which has a flat surface, are easy to measure. Use a ruler or measuring tape to determine the length of the screw.

3. Measure the head of the screw in mm to determine its diameter (gauge). Gauge size can range from 12½ (small) to 2 (large). As a general rule of thumb, the bigger the diameter number the smaller the nail or screw.
