1
Use the "penny" size to identify the length of the screw. The term "penny" is used to identify the length and size of a nail or screw. The most common penny designations are 2d, 3d, 4d, or 2-penny, 3-penny and 4-penny respectively; however, screws can also be as long as 60-penny.

2
Measure the length of the screw in mm starting from the tip of the nail to the head. The oval-head screw, which extends in a slight oval; the round-head screw, which protrudes in a half-circle; and the flat-head screw, which has a flat surface, are easy to measure. Use a ruler or measuring tape to determine the length of the screw.

3
Measure the head of the screw in mm to determine its diameter (gauge). Gauge size can range from 12½ (small) to 2 (large). As a general rule of thumb, the bigger the diameter number the smaller the nail or screw.
