How to Troubleshoot Intercom Systems

Intercom systems can be used to communicate between different rooms and doors using wireless "intercom stations." Intercoms use digital signals to control which wireless intercom stations are called. A unique code stops your neighbors from accessing the system. There's usually a "Call All" or "Page" button for calling all the stations. Or, you can selectively call a station. The doorbell console attaches to a wall with a mounting plate and the intercom console can be placed on a table, or screwed to the wall. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Check to see if the intercom station is plugged into the household power if it isn't working. The station should plug into a power supply and that power supply should plug into the wall. Any door intercom unit is likely using a 9-volt alkaline battery, which should be replaced with a fresh one. If the power indicator isn't lit, double check the power source.

    • 2

Keep the console away from fluorescent lights if you get excessive hum from the speaker. Hum at the doorbell station can indicate the unit is too close to a household power line. Try moving it and see if that helps.

    • 3

Make sure the antenna is pointed up, and is fully extended if the intercom station doesn't work at a distance from the other stations. Try moving the station closer.

    • 4

Move the units around to try and get better reception. They use radio waves and are susceptible to interference in the same way that your television is. Keep the intercom unit away from other electronics---particularly microwave ovens. Move the units away from metal objects.

    • 5

Change the frequency switches on the units. Interference can be reduced by selecting different radio frequencies. All the units should be on the same frequency, though.

    • 6

Change the house code if an intercom station goes off for no apparent reason.

    • 7

Make sure there is at least six feet between the units if they behave erratically.
