How to Avoid Fluid Retention in the Later Stages of Pregnancy

It may not be possible to completely avoid fluid retention and swelling in the later stages of pregnancy. According to the American Pregnancy Association, swelling during the third trimester is common because the body produces 50 percent more blood and other fluids to nourish the growing baby. If you notice slight swelling in your face, hands, legs, feet or ankles, rest assured it is normal. This type of swelling, called edema, is harmless---except for possibly causing you to go up a shoe size temporarily---and you can take measures to prevent or at least reduce it.

Instructions

    • 1

Stay cool. The American Pregnancy Association reports that summertime heat can result in swelling during pregnancy. So stay indoors if you live in a warm climate, or rest or swim in a pool to cool down.

    • 2

Relax as much as possible. Standing for long periods or just being active for too many hours can lead to fluid retention. Lie down and elevate your feet whenever you can. When sitting, don't cross your legs.

    • 3

Eat bananas and other foods rich in potassium. This includes fresh and dried fruits such as raisins, prunes, apricots, dates, strawberries, watermelon, cantaloupe and oranges. It also means vegetables such as beets, greens, spinach, tomatoes, mushrooms and peas. Even meats such as turkey, fish and beef can provide their share of potassium.

    • 4

Avoid sodas and other caffeinated drinks. Drink water--a lot of it. Water flushes out toxins and actually helps reduce fluid retention, which causes edema.

    • 5

Say no to potato chips and other salty treats. Sodium is another culprit when it comes to fluid retention. If you must add salt to your food, use a sodium-free salt substitute.

    • 6

Think flats, not high fashion. Avoid high heels and tight clothing. You now have a great excuse to skip the pantyhose.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you work in an office, take advantage of your rest and lunch breaks by finding a quiet space to relax, put your feet up or lie down if you can. Even 10 minutes of rest can increase your energy level and help prevent swelling in pregnancy.

  • Although slight swelling is common, sudden swelling in your hands or face or swelling in one leg only is cause for concern, according to the American Pregnancy Association and the Mayo Clinic. If you experience sudden swelling, call your OB/GYN, as it can be a sign of preeclampsia.
