How to Make Kilt Costumes

There are many occasions in life that may call for a kilt costume: Halloween, reenactments, cultural fairs and events, plus many more. Buying a kilt can be expensive. Plus, if you buy your kilt, you won't be able to personalize it. Making your own kilt costume is quick, easy, and relatively inexpensive. With a lot of plaid fabric and some basic sewing skills, you can make a great looking kilt and put all of your personality into it.

Things You'll Need

  • Plaid fabric
  • Matching thread
  • Fabric scissors
  • Sewing machine
  • Large safety pins
  • Tassels

Instructions

    • 1

      Cut out a piece of fabric that is 30 inches long and 12 inches wider than the circumference of your waist. Hem the fabric all the way around.

      Sew the tassels all around the waistband, wrap the kilt around your waist, and pin it in place using large safety pins.

      To make a sash, cut a piece of fabric that is 2 1/2 yards long and 6 inches wide. Fringe the two shorter edges of the fabric by cutting lots of small slits into the fabric. Hem the rest of the edges.

      Wrap the sash over one shoulder and tie the ends together at your waist on the opposite side.

      Pair the kilt and sash with white, knee length socks and a white, oversized, long-sleeved shirt.
