1
Remove the current handrail by using a hammer and gently hammering the underside of the handrail until it begins to pop off of the spindles. Once the handrail is loosened, you will be able to pry it off. Measure the current handrail to give you the proper measurement for your new handrail.
-
2
Cut the new handrail if needed to the appropriate length and angle of your staircase. Use a pencil to mark the underside of the new handrail to match up with the stair spindles.
-
-
3
Begin drilling a small hole where you made marks on the handrail. The drilled hole should be about a half-inch deep.
-
4
Apply wood glue to the top of the stair spindles where the handrail will meet the spindle. Apply some wood glue in the newly drilled hole as well.
-
5
Place some glue on the handrail where it meets the wall and at the bottom where it meets the newel post.
-
6
Attach the handrail to the spindles by gently placing the handrail on the corresponding spindles. Wipe away any excess glue that you may see. Begin from the top and work your way down the staircase. If you have a large staircase, you may want to ask someone to help you hold the handrail in place as you secure it to the spindles.
-
7
Attach the handrail to the wall fitting and also to the newel post. For a more secure handrail, drill wood screws on the underside of the handrail into the wall and newel post.
-
8
Allow the wood glue to drive for 24 hours before placing pressure on the handrail.
