How to Plant an Apple Seed Straight from the Apple

If you love eating apples but don't like spending your money at the local grocery store or farmer's market to purchase them, you should consider growing your own apple trees. All you need to do is start using the seeds that are embedded inside the core of your apple instead of throwing those seeds away. By using the seeds, along with fertile soil, water and sunlight, in about 6 years you can have an apple tree that is yielding fruit a-plenty. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the apple seeds from the core of the apple.

    • 2

Wrap the apple seeds inside of a moist paper towel for one week. It is important to keep the paper towel moist at all times.

    • 3

Choose a small container that can be used to start growing your apple tree. This container does not have to be big. You can use a small disposable cup or cut up an egg carton if you do not want to spend money on a pot.

    • 4

Fill the small container halfway full of fertile soil. If you like, you can purchase potting soil from your local gardening supply. Some department stores, such as Walmart, Kmart and Target, also sell potting soil.

    • 5

Use one of your fingers to make a hole in the center of the soil. The hole should extend about 1 inch beneath the surface of the soil.

    • 6

Place one of the apple seeds inside of the hole.

    • 7

Cover up the hole with some of the soil to conceal the apple seed.

    • 8

Place the apple seed pot in an area that is exposed to a lot of direct sunlight, such as a window ledge.

    • 9

Keep the soil in your apple seed pot moist to the touch by watering the seeds on a regular basis.

    • 10

Watch your apple seed pot until you notice that the seed has begun to sprout.

    • 11

Remove the apple seed sprout from the pot after the plant has budded several leaves.

    • 12

Plant the budded plant outside in fertile soil. The sprout should be in a location that will allow the tree to have room to grow and blossom without interference from other plants.

    • 13

Repeat steps 3 through 12 for each of the remaining apple seeds you wish to plant.
