How to Shingle Two Roof Lines That Come Together
The point where two roof lines come together is called a roof valley. There are several different methods of shingling roof valleys, but one of the most common ways is to lay an open valley, which uses a layer of metal flashing along the valley. Caution must be taken when shingling roof valleys, because a poorly shingled roof valley can develop leaks and cause considerable damage to the roof foundation and the interior of the home. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1
Make any repairs before you begin. Inspect the roof for rot or other problems and address those issues before beginning to reshingle.
-
2
Measure the length and width of each roof section. Multiply length by width for each area and add the total together to get the roof's total square footage. Remember to measure dormers and any other extensions. Divide the total square footage by 100 to figure out how many squares of roof tile you will need to purchase. Buy a little extra---10 percent or so---for edges and future repairs.

3
Cover the valley with mineral-surfaced roll roofing material, which is easy to install and protects against leaks.
-
4
Lay an 18-inch-wide strip of metal flashing down the middle of the roof joint from the eaves to the top of the ridge, nailing it securely along the edges and making sure it stays flat.
-
5
Place roofing cement along the edges of the flashing.
-
6
Lay a 36-inch-wide strip of the roofing material on top of the previous strip, nailing down the outer edges.
-
7
Snap in two chalk lines along the edges of the valley starting at the ridge with the chalk lines 6 inches apart. Widen the lines 1/8 inch per foot as you move down the valley to the eaves.
-
8
Install a line of shingles up the valley and trim the shingles at the chalk lines.
-
9
Place a small amount of roofing cement on the end of each shingle and nail the shingles in place.
