Start up a friendship with your prospective date at least a month in advance of prom. Make sure she does not have a boyfriend. Speak casually about school dances and the upcoming prom to see what her plans entail. If she does not have a date, mention that you don't have a date either, but do not invite her just yet. Try to plant the idea of you two going together in her mind without outright saying it.

Ask her to have a dinner date with you one night, and go to an upscale Chinese restaurant. Print out a small, rectangular piece of paper with the words, "Will you go to prom with me?" written across it. Give this paper to the manager of the restaurant with instructions to place it inside a fortune cookie, which will be brought to your date at the end of the meal.
