How to Oil a Uni-Filter Foam Filter

Almost all makes and models of all-terrain vehicles use a uni-filter foam filter in their air cleaning systems. These filters use a layer of oil to catch debris before it can enter the engine. It is not the foam that filters the air but the oil on it, so you need to know how to properly oil a uni-filter foam filter. An air filter that is damaged or dirty can choke the air flow to your engine and cause serious internal damage.

    Things You'll Need

    • Spray foam oil
    • Liquid foam oil

Inspect your uni-filter foam filter to make sure it is dry and clean. This shouldn't be a problem if you are installing a new filter but you should examine new filters for tears and imperfections as well.

Choose which style of foam oil you will use: spray or liquid. If you are using liquid foam oil, go to Step 3. To oil a foam filter using spray foam oil, hold the filter by sticking your index and middle finger into the hollow center and letting the filter rest on your knuckles. Hold the spray can 6 inches from the foam and begin to spray. Coat the entire outside of the foam filter to the point of saturation. Stop spraying and remove the filter from your fingers and knead the filter to work the oil through. Set the filter aside to dry.

Pour about 1/2 cup of foam oil into a plastic zipper bag. Put the filter in the bag and press the seal closed. Knead the oil into the filter through the bag, working it until all of the foam is saturated. Remove the filter from the bag and discard the oil remaining in the bag. Let the filter dry.

Check the uni-filter for dry spots. Debris may enter the filter at dry spots and cause the foam to disintegrate. Dry spots will be lighter in color then the foam that is oiled. If you have dry spots, repeat these steps.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Always have a spare filter on hand, so if you discover a tear you can immediately replace it and not interrupt your riding.

    • Don't use a hair dryer to dry the foam faster; any heat source will wind up damaging the foam.
