Instructions

  1. Setting coaching objectives in soccer

    • 1

Find out the age of the players you will be coaching. Are the players little kids, teenagers or adults?

    • 2

Determine what kind of players you will be coaching. Is the team a recreational team or an elite team? Are they just playing for fun? Or is winning the main objective?

    • 3

Find out what the experience level and talent level is going to be. Do you have to start from the basics? Is this a team of players who know nothing? Or are you going to coach experienced players?

    • 4

Decide whether the team is dedicated to improving the individual skill level of players or a team that is results-based. Does the team have to win? Or is your job to improve the skills of the players?

    • 5

Choose what area you want the team to work on first. Do you need to practice ball skills, such as trapping, shooting and dribbling? Or do you need to focus on set pieces, such as throw-ins, goal kicks, corner kicks and free kicks?

    • 6

Choose what tactics for the team to focus on. Do you want the team to work on offensive or defensive tactics?

    • 7

Choose what formation you want the team to play. Is the team going to play defensively with more defenders in a formation such as a 4-5-1 (4 defenders, 5 midfielders and 1 striker)? Is the team going to use a balanced formation such as a 4-4-2 (4 defenders, 4 midfielders and 2 strikers)? Or are you going to implement an attacking formation such as a 3-4-3 (3 defenders, 4 midfielders and 3 strikers)?

    • 8

Choose the training you want to implement in practice. Choose the individual drills you will use in practice.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep the players motivated. Keep the game fun and change the drills as the players increase their talent levels individually and as a team.
