How to Cut Wine Bottle Corks
Wine lovers are always trying to find a way to remember a fine bottle of wine. Whether the taste was exceptional, the place where it was served brought delight or the occasion was a life moment, capturing and remembering the total experience of the wine is often important. Corks, many with vineyard markings, can be relegated to big bowls that gather dust or you can do something creative with those memories by slicing them up.

1
Determine if your project will require corks to be sliced into rounds or halves. For example, if you want to make a trivet (which requires a flat and stable surface to rest a container on), cut your cork into round sections. If you want to display your corks in a frame, cut them in halves.

2
Using a pencil or thin marker and a short rule or straight edge, mark the cutting points on the cork.

3
Hold the cork firmly against a cutting board or pad and use the utility knife to cut along the lines with a smooth and consistent motion. Do not saw through the cork.

4
To display corks in a frame, place the frame, without glass, flat on your work surface. When the glue gun is hot, spread glue around the edges of a cut cork piece and place it in one inside corner of the frame. Repeat the process working toward the opposite edge of the frame. Continue until the frame is full.

Leave the project in position and allow to dry for at least eight hours. Re-glue loose pieces if necessary.

Tips & Warnings
Collecting enough corks will take some time for most projects. Avoid having them dry out by keeping them in a sealed bag or container. You can find all the tools for this kind of a project at a local craft store.
Utility knives are very sharp, so do not rush the cutting process.
Hot glue guns can burn, so use caution.
