How to Open a Kryptonite Lock

In 1972, in a publicity stunt created by Kryptonite founder Michael Zane, Kryptonite left expensive bikes in precarious locations all over New York City. Despite many of the accessories being stolen, the bikes themselves remained locked to the parking meters and street furniture. One bike remained locked up for thirty days, until Kryptonite removed it.

Instructions

    • 1

Register your Kryptonite keys or combination code at the Kryptonite website (see Resources). That way if you lose the keys, or forget the combination, you will be able to open the lock. Keys can get damaged too. If you were to damage the key, you could order a new one.

    • 2

Try all the supplied keys. Make sure you are inserting the key all the way into the cylinder before turning it.

    • 3

Order a set of replacement keys, if both keys are damaged.

    • 4

Send the lock to Kryptonite if you have lost the keys, haven't registered the lock and it isn't locked to anything. Kryptonite can open it and re-key it. In 2009, the cost of re-keying is $20.00 for disc-style key locks. This price includes the locksmith fee, two new keys and shipping back to you. See the link in References for the website and address.

Tips & Warnings

  • The tighter the lock, the harder it is for a thief to twist or use tools to break. U-locks should be positioned so the frame and wheels use up as much open space as possible within the U.
