How to Use a Self Contained Breathing Apparatus

A Self-contained Breathing Apparatus is a face mask used by firefighters and construction workers for cleanup projects that could contain toxic or dangerous materials. The first recorded SCBA was created by John Dean in 1818 when he helped his father save horses from their burning barn. Today, not only is the apparatus used by professionals on the job, but it is also used by chemistry and other science students while conducting experiments.

Instructions

1. Inspect the condition of the mask visually before trying it on. Check the stability of the face piece and head harness. Inspect the glass for any scratches or cuts. Observe the straps and buckles for cuts or tears. Check the cylinder for any dents. Inspect the hoses for any breakage or odd bulges. If there is any damage, the mask cannot be used.

2. Put on the cylinder and backpack. A partner will be helpful with this part since the equipment can be awkward to handle. Connect and adjust the waist belt and straps to whatever feels most comfortable to you. Check to see if any of the hoses or straps are twisted. Place the pressure indicator in a position so the dial can be easily read. Slip on the face mask and, starting at the chin, adjust the straps to obtain the perfect fit.

3. Perform a negative test by blocking the end of the inhalation tube with the palm of your hand. The face piece should collapse against your face if it is fitted correctly. Make any adjustments needed and perform this test until you have a perfect fit.

4. Close the purge valve and press the air saver switch when you want to remove the SCBA. Loosen the head harness and remove the face mask. Turn the cylinder valve to the "Off" position. Loosen the waist belt and shoulder straps and gently remove the equipment. Turn the airflow controller "On" and "Off" again to remove any trapped air.

5. Wipe out the inside of the mask and place it into a protective plastic bag. Store the face mask in a cool, dry place. Send the backpack and tank equipment to be refilled right away. Clearly mark whether a SCBA is damaged by placing a "Caution" tag on it.

Tips & Warnings

• Keep calm when testing your SCBA and breathe normally.

• Sometimes a person can feel claustrophobic while wearing the mask. If this happens to you, remove the mask right away.
