How to Clean Old Polyurethane Wood Floors
Polyurethane finish adds a gloss coating to the top of the wood floor surface, which can wear thin over years of wear and tear. Sweep over the floors using a dust mop. These soft mops are available at any home improvement store, and last for years. They are made of a soft microfiber cloth that collects dust on the wood floors without scratching the surface. Sweep over the floors to collect loose dust, and shake the mop off outdoors.

Fill a bucket with about a gallon of warm water, and stir in two spoonfuls of liquid dish detergent. The soap will work as a mild cleanser that will harm neither the wood floors or the polyurethane finish. Agitate the water until soap bubbles form.

Add an optional cup of baking soda to the cleaning solution, which will work as a deodorizer. This is especially useful for bathroom floors and floors that often come into contact with pets. Stir the baking soda into the water until it dissolves.

Dip your mop in the cleaning solution, then twist the mop to remove any excess water. Too much moisture can cause water damage to the flooring, so it is important to use a little elbow grease to twist out as much water as possible.

Mop over the floors in large smooth strokes, following the grain of the wood. When floors have been cleaned to your liking, let them air dry or wipe over the floors with a dry mop to collect excess moisture.
