How to Hang a Wooden Wall Mirror

Hanging heavy decorative objects, like a wall mirror with a wooden frame, can be a challenge. The safest way to hang a wooden-framed wall mirror is to locate the wall studs to support the weight of the mirror. A stud finder will locate the studs. If it isn't practical to hang the wall mirror at the studs, heavy-duty picture-hanging hardware should be used in combination with screw and anchor sets. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure about 10 inches from the top and 1/4 inch from each side of the wooden frame for placement of the hanging rings. Take these measurements on the back of the fram. Both rings should be at the same distance from the top of the frame. Mark with a pencil.

    • 2

Pre-drill small pilot holes for the screws if the frame is a very hard wood.

    • 3

Fasten the hanging ring to the frame by screwing a screw through each hole of the small plate, with the ring toward the top of the mirror. A hanging ring is a pivoting metal ring attached to a small metal plate with two screw holes in it.

    • 4

Determine the location and height for the mirror. Measure carefully. Level the mirror. Mark the top of the hanging rings on the wall with a pencil. If hanging the wooden frame mirror at the wall studs, screw two large screws directly into the studs. If hanging on drywall, masonry or plaster, drill holes, insert heavy-duty anchors and screw into the anchors. Leave at least 1/4 inch of the screw above the level of the wall.

    • 5

Lift the mirror and carefully loop each hanging ring over the corresponding screw in the wall. Make certain that the wooden frame mirror is fully supported by the hanging hardware.

Tips & Warnings

  • The screws used to attach the hanging ring to the back of the wooden frame should be at least 1 inch long, but not longer than the depth of the wooden frame. It is important to position the two hanging rings identically on the back of the mirror frame. An assistant is a great help in transferring this measurement to the wall. It is easiest to adjust the mirror location by doing a hanging test with only one screw holding the hanging rings. If the mirror is perfect, install the other screws. Otherwise, make adjustments to the hanging rings.

  • Use heavy-duty hanging hardware; a wooden frame mirror can weigh more than 50 pounds.
