How to Sew a Fabric Snowman
Fabric snowmen add a cheerful accent to your holiday decor, and you can create a pattern of any size you like by using things from your kitchen. This is a great project for kids, who can hand-sew the pieces together or use fabric glue instead of sewing them. It's also a quick item to make for a holiday bazaar. Make patterns of different sizes and put together a snowman family to offer for sale.

1
Make a pattern. Trace the bottom of a juice glass, shot glass or other small round object onto a piece of poster board or cardboard. Place a coffee mug or other round object of a similar size at the bottom of the first circle you traced, overlapping the edges slightly, and trace around it. Use a small mixing bowl, jar or other slightly larger round object for the third circle. Set it at the bottom of the second circle, overlapping the edges slightly, and trace around it.
Draw a second line 1/4 inch outside the first.
-
2
Cut out the pattern along the outside line.
-
-
3
Fold a large piece of white felt in half, or use two pieces of felt that are large enough to accommodate your pattern, and place the pattern on the felt. Weigh it down with a heavy object such as a can of vegetables.
-
4
Cut the felt around the outside edge of the pattern.
-
5
Sew the two pieces of felt together using a 1/4-inch seam allowance, beginning at the bottom edge and continuing around the entire piece, leaving a 2-inch opening at the bottom for stuffing.
-
6
Stuff the snowman firmly with polyester fiberfill, cotton batting or clean cut-up pantyhose. Use the eraser end of a pencil to push the stuffing into the head.
-
7
Hand-sew the bottom opening closed.
-
8
Measure the circumference of the snowman's head and add 2 3/4 inches. Measure the snowman's head from the top to a spot halfway down. Cut a piece of colored felt to those measurements for a hat.
Tie the measuring tape around the snowman's neck like a scarf, and note the measurement at the bottom. Cut a piece of colored felt to that length and 1 1/2 inches wide for a scarf.
-
9
Fringe the ends of the scarf piece by making cuts in the felt about a 1/2 inch long.
-
10
Sew the hat along one long edge and one short edge, using a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Trim the felt close to the seam.
-
11
Sew small black buttons to the snowman's head for eyes and sew larger black "coal" buttons to his body. Sew a small orange button below the eyes for a "carrot" nose.
-
12
Place the hat on the snowman's head and fold the bottom edge up. Tie the scarf around the snowman's neck.
