How to Install an In-Ground Basketball Pole with Concrete
Installing a basketball pole in the ground using concrete can easily be done with a few tools and supplies. It is important to get it right the first time because there is no second time with concrete without a lot of extra work. Additionally, it is important to get the pole level in the ground because a couple of degrees difference at the base can drastically affect the level of the rim, so be careful.

First, you need to dig the hole. Give some serious thought where you would like the basketball pole, paying special attention to centering it on your driveway/playing surface. Mark the location for the pole. Take your shovel and dig a hole that is three times as wide as the pole and 1/4 as deep as the pole is tall. For example, a 4-inch wide pole that is 12 feet tall would have a 12-inch round hole that is 3 feet deep.

Next, place the pole in the hole. Cut the rope into three lengths and use it to anchor the pole so that it stands upright. Make sure the pole is level both front to back and side to side at this point as well.

Finally, mix the concrete and fill in the hole with the concrete. The concrete likely will not go all the way to the top. Check the level of the pole one last time and allow the concrete to dry 24 hours. After the concrete is dry, fill in the hole with the remaining dirt and tamp the dirt compact.
