How to Change the Registered Name for XP

The Windows XP operating system allows the computer owner to assign a registered name to a PC. This can be done during XP installation or when registering a new installation. It's good practice to change the registered name if, for example, you acquire a used computer. You can do this by accessing the Windows Registry Editor and changing a registry value, which takes only a few minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the "Start" menu in the lower left corner of the screen and click on "Run."

    • 2

Type "regedit" in the search line and click on "OK" to bring up the Windows Registry Editor.

    • 3

Find and click on the following registry key:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version

    • 4

Double-click the "Registered Owner" value in the right portion of the Registry Editor's window.

    • 5

Type the new registered name in the "Value" field and click on "OK." Exit the Registry Editor and restart your computer to implement the change.

Tips & Warnings

  • Right-click on the "My Computer" icon either on your desktop or in the "Start" menu and select "Properties" to view the new registered name of your computer.
