How to Make Hats & Boats With Paper
Turning ordinary paper into hats and boats is a favorite pastime of young children. Folding the paper does not take much talent or knowledge, but there are definite tricks to forming the hats and boats. Get a whole bunch of kids together, find a lot of paper and work together to make a whole fleet of ships and their sailors.
Instructions

Hats
-
1
Make the hat first since the completed hat serves as the beginnings of the boat.
-
2
Take a sheet of 8½-by-11 paper and fold it in half crosswise. Unfold the paper and fold on the same crease in the opposite direction. Unfold the paper again.
-
-
3
Fold down the folded corners of the paper to meet the crease in the middle forming two triangles at the top and leaving you two layers of one unfolded strip at the bottom.
-
4
Use the top strip and fold it up and over the folded triangles. Fold down the edges of the strip that overlaps the triangles.
-
5
Flip the paper over and fold the remaining strip over the previously folded triangles. Fold the excess, overlapping triangles down.
-
6
Open up the hat at the bottom and put it on your head.
Boats
-
7
Hold the hat upside down and line up the two ends to form a diamond shape.
-
8
Fold the diamond in half crosswise to make a triangle.
-
9
Open it up as before and fold in the opposite corners.
-
10
Take the two loose corners and pull them apart. Be gentle with this step and be patient because it takes a little getting used to to get it just right and open the paper into a boat.

Tips & Warnings
Practice these paper-folding projects a little bit by yourself before involving the kids. It can be a little tricky, especially finishing the boat.
Use any size or style of paper for your boats and hats. A hat made with regular paper is not that big. Use newspaper or scrapbooking paper for larger and more colorful hats.
