  1. How to Make a Crochet Oval Runner Rug

    • 1

Figure the size of the rug you wish to crochet. Decide whether you will use yarn or fabric to make the rug. Purchase sufficient quantities of colors or styles of yarn or fabric. If you are using fabric, wash and dry it prior to using in a rug. Fabric must then be prepared by cutting many long, thin strips. If you are using yarn, purchase washable yarn or the rug may shrink.

    • 2

Make a test pattern using the yarn or fabric, using the stitch you will use to make the rug. Chain 20 stitches. Turn and crochet a row in the stitch you will use to make your rug. Continue to turn and crochet rows for 5 to 10 rows. Crochet enough rows to get a gauge of how many stitches per inch are made in your chosen pattern.

Single crochet is an easy stitch for the beginner, or you may wish to use a more advanced stitch such as the popcorn or waffle weave stitch.

    • 3

Once you have the gauge, you can figure out the pattern for the rug. The first row must contain enough stitches to make the rug long enough without it getting overly wide. If, for instance your rug is 24" x 60" and your gauge is 1.5 stitches per inch, there should be 24" divided by 1.5 stitches = 16 rows. The starting chain must be L 60" - W 24" = 36" divided by Gauge 1.5 stitches = 24 stitches.

    • 4

Chain the number of stitches from the previous step. Work in pattern, increasing 2 or more stitches at each turn. Increase enough stitches so the rug lays flat. To increase, crochet 2 stitches in stitch from previous row. Or you may crochet in previous row, chain 1, crochet in previous row, chain 1, crochet in previous row. This will depend on your chosen stitch and whether you wish to have open space or not. Chain stitching creates a small amount of open space, while crocheting two stitches in the previous row does not.

To join one row to the next, work in pattern to the last stitch, slip stitch in the first stitch, chain 2-3 (depending on the height of your chosen stitch) and begin working the next row.

    • 5

When the rug is the proper size, finish the row by joining the last stitch to the first stitch with a slip stitch. Tie off, cut yarn or fabric and weave the end into the rug. You may wish to lay the rug on the floor straight away, or wash and dry it first.

Tips & Warnings

  • Fabric and yarn can be intermixed to add variety and interest.

  • If you use a textured or fuzzy yarn, use a simple stitch, as details get lost within the texture.

  • If fabric is not washed prior to using in a rug, it may shrink or bleed colors when washed.
