How to Record on a Computer
It is a myth that recording audio requires special software and devices. You can record audio on your computer with just a basic speaker and microphone. Windows sound recorder is a audio recording utility that can be used for this purpose. You can record anything from simple sounds or speeches to even a hourlong rock concert. To get better quality of audio it is always recommended to use a high-quality microphone. Follow these simple steps and start recording your own audio.

Connect your speakers and microphone to your computer. Make sure the drivers for the sound card, speakers and microphone are already installed in your computer.

Turn your speakers and microphone on, and make sure they are working properly.

Click "Start->Control Panel->Sound" and make sure the volume level for playback and recording is set to the maximum level. If there are volume adjustments in the speakers and microphone, set them to desired levels.

Click "Start->All Programs->Accessories" and select "Sound recorder" to open the Windows recorder utility.

Click "New" and then click "Start Recording" to start recording the desired audio. Once you click the "Start Recording" button, the actual recording begins.

Once you have finished recording, hit the "Stop Recording" button. Any audio that comes after the "Stop Recording" button is pressed won't be recorded. You can make a test recording to check whether the audio is recorded to desired sound levels.

Play the audio using the "Play" button and check whether the recording was successful. Once you are satisfied with the audio, click "File->Save as" and supply a file name and destination to save your audio.
