How to Get a Practice Exam for Being a Police Officer

Practice exams can be an effective means to prepare for police department employment assessments. Not all police departments have the same hiring procedures, so it is important to know the rules of the department to which you wish to apply. In addition, many private companies offer aid in preparation for law enforcement exams.

Instructions

    • 1

Ask the police department that you wish to join about their hiring procedures. State and local law enforcement agencies may differ in this regard, and some may require more than a simple exam, such as requisite academy training.

    • 2

Many departments, such as those in New York City and Denver, offer test-preparation materials at little or no cost (see reference 3). The NYPD, for example, offers an extensive exam-preparation kit on their website at no charge (see reference 1).

    • 3

If a test-preparation kit is not available, request copies of past exams. These may even be available in your local library. Many departments sorely need officers and will happily assist in your pursuit of a position. For example, the Los Angeles Police Department's website offers extensive information related to recruiting, including test preparation advice (see reference 2).

    • 4

If you know any officers that work at your prospective department, ask for a copy of the exam that they took, if it was returned to them. These officers can also offer invaluable advice on how to succeed at the exam.

    • 5

Consider police test preparation through a private company. Many companies offer online and in-person preparation, including proctored exams, which can more than adequately prepare you for the real thing.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider more than one department, and examine practice tests from all. It is best to be as prepared as possible for the specific test you will take.
