How to Lengthen a Motorcycle Chain

The length of your motorcycle chain is integral to the drive system's correct and reliable workings. A chain that is too long will slap the frame or chain guard and may fall off of the front or rear sprocket. A chain that is too short will cause undue stress to the rear wheel and drive sprocket, risking breakage. Keep your motorcycle running properly by lengthening your chain correctly.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the drive sprocket cover from your motorcycle, so you can see the chain clearly and work on it openly. You may want to consult your owner's manual or shop manual.

    • 2

Determine the length of chain that needs to be added for proper slack and tightness. Most motorcycles work best with 1 inch of play in the lower run of the chain.

    • 3

Remove a pin from a link of an extra chain using a motorcycle chain tool.

    • 4

Count out the correct number of links needed, and use a chain tool to push the pin through the end link. Be sure the pin does not come out of the chain completely. Only push the pin enough to break the link.

    • 5

Use the chain tool to break a link on the motorcycle's chain. Do not push the pin all the way out, as it will be needed to attach the new chain segment.

    • 6

Set the new section of chain in place between the two ends of the motorcycle's chain. Use the chain tool to push the pins back into place, securing the new chain segment. Test for correct slack, and adjust tension accordingly.

    • 7

Replace the drive sprocket cover, and lubricate the new section of chain before riding.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be sure the new section of chain for your motorcycle starts with a closed link and ends with an open one. Otherwise, the chain will not connect directly to the motorcycle's existing chain.
