Understand how government housing programs work before you start your search. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) offers subsidized housing and rental assistance for individuals over 62 who meet the program requirements and are deemed to have very low income. The eligibility criteria will vary from state to state, but "very low income" generally refers to an income at or below 50% of the area's median income. The HUD 202 program only pays for the cost of housing and not any other assisted living needs. However, many of the senior housing facilities include such services in the rent. Some of these services may include meal delivery programs, transportation programs and wellness programs for senior citizens.

Consider your needs (or the needs of your loved one) and choose the program or facility that meets those needs. Before you decide to apply for senior low income housing, there are some things to consider. The HUD 202 program does not include nursing homes and facilities. If you or your loved one require an extended amount of medical care, the 202 program may not be right for you. If assistance is needed to obtain admission into a low cost nursing home program, contact your county's Medicare office for more information. Senior safety is an important thing to keep in mind when choosing housing as well. Make sure that the location of your choice is equipped for senior safety and that any necessary aids such as shower handles and durable flooring are available.

Once you've gathered all of the information and made a decision, you can start the application process for senior low income housing. Applicants are required to submit an application for a capital advance, a completed HUD Form 92015-CA, and any other information implicated in the Notice of Funding Availability of the Federal Register. You should submit your application to your local HUD office in the county in which you reside.
