No matter how well you clean your home, pests will get in. No one wants harsh chemicals around their pets and children, but we all want the pests gone. There are several essential oils that work just as well as the sprays you buy to kill ants, bugs, flies, etc.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • one empty ten ounce spray bottle for each spray made
  • peppermint essential oil
  • cinnamon or turmeric oil
  • citrus oil
  • thyme oil
  • lemon eucalyptus oil
  • one 32 ounce bottle of witch hazel
  1. Step 1

To kill ants in the home, add 20 drops of peppermint essential oil to nine ounces of witch hazel. Spray around windowsill, doorways, and directly on any ants in the house.

  2. Step 2

To kill flies, add 20 drops of cinnamon or 25 drops of turmeric oil to nine ounces of witch hazel. Spray lightly around areas that flies are seen. This spray can also be used on your skin when outdoors to repel flies and other insects.

  3. Step 3

To kill cockroaches, add 30 drops of citrus oil to nine ounces of witch hazel and spray on problem areas.

  4. Step 4

To kill mosquitoes, rub thyme oil on exposed skin.

  5. Step 5

To kill ticks, add 30 drops of lemon eucalyptus oil to nine ounces of witch hazel and spray on clothing and skin.

Tips & Warnings
  • experiment a little with the amount of essential oil you use for each insect pest. You may need to use a little more or a little less, depending on how bad the infestation is.
  • Never take essential oils internally.

on 11/30/2009 witch hazel is just the carrier for the oil. You could use water if you prefer, but witch hazel does repel most insects and is safe to use.

on 11/30/2009 Witch hazel seems to be the common ingredient in most of your formulas. Does the witch hazel kill/repel the insects or is it the essential oil?
