Pay attention to the duration of your cough. If you experience a persistent cough that lasts longer than three months, you could be suffering from the whooping cough. Regular coughs disappear after common cold and flu symptoms go away, but the whooping cough can last for months at a time with little to no relief.

Listen to the sound of your cough. Does your cough make a "whooping sound" when you try to take a breath? Do you hear a hacking sound when coughing? Chances are, you most likely have Pertussis. Whooping Cough is a highly contagious bacterial disease that can be prevented. Whooping Cough is passed on in the same way a common cold is transmitted. Avoid coming into contact with individuals who have a persistent cough.
