How to Make a Groomsmen's Boutonniere

Making wedding flowers at home can be a way for couples to save money on a wedding. Rather than order boutonnieres for the groomsmen from a florist, it is possible to make groomsmen boutonnieres with just a few simple tools. The groomsmen's boutonnieres typically use a large flower and can be transformed easily into a wedding accessory.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 large flower (such as a rose)
  • Floral shears
  • Floral wire
  • Floral tape
  • 2 flower leaves
  • Baby's breath
  • Boutonniere pin
  • Water
  • Plastic bag or container

Instructions

    • 1

Cut stems to about 3 inches below the flower.

    • 2

Carefully insert floral wire into the base of the flower head. Bend each end of the wire down so that the wire is parallel to the stem. This will secure the flower head upright and prevent it from drooping.

    • 3

Wrap floral tape around the wire and stem and then set it aside.

    • 4

Overlap two flower leaves so that the two stems meet. This will be the background of your boutonniere. Hold the leaves tightly in your hand.

    • 5

Add a few small pieces of baby's breath to the leaves and continue to hold the arrangement tightly.

    • 6

Place the flower with the leaves and baby's breath. Arrange the flower so that the leaves extend above the flower about 1 inch.

    • 7

Wrap floral tape around the stems of the flower, leaves and baby's breath so that all of the stems are secured tightly together. Make sure that the floral tape goes from the top to the bottom of the stems.

    • 8

Add another piece of baby's breath to the front of the boutonniere, below the flower. Use floral tape to secure the piece of baby's breath to the rest of the boutonniere. This will make the boutonniere look fuller.

    • 9

Insert a boutonniere pin into the back of the stem. This will later be used to pin the boutonniere onto the groomsman.

    • 10

Lightly mist the boutonniere with water.

    • 11

Place the boutonniere into a tightly sealed plastic bag or a plastic container for storage. Store in a cooler or refrigerator until it is ready to be used.

Tips & Warnings

  • When using fresh flowers, make the boutonniere as close to the wedding as possible so that the flower and foliage stay fresh.

  • Floral tape works best if it is pulled and wrapped tightly.

  • Do not store the boutonniere in the freezer or the foliage could wilt.
