It will often come as a shock, but the smell is unmistakable, when you accidentally burn plastic to one of your cooking pans. Burning plastic happens most often when you are adding a bag of vegetables, rice or other type of food into a pan of boiling water. The bag doesn't quite make it into the pan, and your're left with a putrid smell and hard plastic stuck to the outside of your pan. Thankfully, burnt on plastic is not necessarily permanent.
Things You'll Need
- Butter knife
- Large pot
- 1 Cup Baking soda
- Oven mitts
Scrape the burnt on plastic with your butter knife. Try to get under the plastic and lift up. Use a significant amount of pressure, and keep the serrated edge of the butter knife turned away from you.
Fill a large pot with water and add your baking soda. Put the pot on your burner and heat on high.
Bring the water and baking soda to a boil and insert your pan. Allow to boil for five minutes.
Put on your oven mitts and remove the pan.
Scrape the remaining plastic away with your butter knife.
Place the pan in the freezer if there is still any burnt-on plastic left. Leave over night.
Take the pan out of the freezer and chip away any remaining plastic with your butter knife.
