The Honda Rubicon is a rugged ATV for riding everywhere and anywhere. However, riding in adverse conditions, such as in the rain, or on uneven surfaces, like mud and gravel, will require more frequent oil changes. The oil change procedure for a Honda Rubicon is a little trickier than that of your car, but can be done with a little patience and effort.
Things You'll Need
- Open ended wrench set
- New drain plug gaskets
- 5 quarts engine oil
- Drainage bucket
Underneath the ATV, locate the four bolts that hold the skid protection plate onto the frame. There should be one in each corner. Use an open-ended wrench to loosen these bolts and remove the skid plate.
Place a drainage bucket underneath the ATV and locate the first drain plug on the right side of the engine case. Remove the drain plug and allow the old oil to drain into the drainage bucket. Replace the drain plug with a new gasket when drained.
Move the drainage bucket to the other side of the ATV, and remove the second drain plug on the left side of the engine case. Allow the remaining oil to drain into the drainage bucket. Replace the drain plug with a new gasket when drained.
From above the ATV, open the oil filler cap and add 3 quarts of engine oil. Close the filler cap, allow the Rubicon to idle for five minutes, shut it off, and then add the remaining 1 1/2 quarts.
Replace the skid protection plate beneath the Rubicon with the four bolts removed earlier. Be sure that these bolts are tight, as the skid protection plate takes quite a beating under riding conditions.
