How to Check the Status of a Marriage Visa

There are two ways to check the status of your marriage K-1 fiancé(e) visa application, by phone with the USCIS (United States Citizenship and Immigration Services) or at their website. You can also sign up to have updates sent to you via email or through a mobile text message every time your case is updated. The new feature of being able to check the status online went into effect in September 2009. The web feature allows for access anywhere and at any time.

Check the status online. The link can be found on the USCIS homepage (www.uscis.gov) in the lefthand column "customer tools" under the title "check my case status." You will be directed to a page that asks for your receipt number. You will have received this number when you filed your K-1 application. If you do not have the number, please contact the USCIS customer service for assistance. Once you have submitted your case number, the status of your application will read as being in acceptance, initial review, request for evidence, testing and interview, decision, post-decision activity, document production or oath ceremony.

Remember that K-1 visas take an average 40-90 days' processing times. The "check my case status" feature online will provide you with estimated time remaining. You can also look into the average times of other K-1 cases; in some cases the process can take up to 5 or 6 months. Be patient, the USCIS receives hundreds of petitions daily; your case will be reviewed in due time.
