How To Trade Stocks with TD Ameritrade

Trading stocks has never been easier through an online broker such as TD Ameritrade with built-in tools and educational articles to help with the many choices. Once you register your account and fund it, you can trade stocks immediately. By providing them with your personal information and an account to send your withdraws to, you can be up and running the same day.

Instructions

    • 1

Register for an account at TD Ameritrade. You will need an email address, and you must provide them personal information, such as your Social Security number and address, to use them as a stock trading platform. You will create a user name and password for your account which you can use to check your investments and balances.

    • 2

Fund your account. In order to buy and trade stocks on any platform, you must deposit money in your trading account. They will use this money to buy whatever stocks, mutual funds or bonds you would like. The minimum deposit at TD Ameritrade as of November 2009 is $1,000 for IRA accounts and $2,000 for non-IRA accounts. They often run promos such as a certain number of free trades to get you started. You can send the money electronically, by check, wire transfer and internal transfer between TD Ameritrade accounts.

    • 3

Log into your account. This will take you to the main area where you can use their tools for researching the stock you are interested in, or you can just start trading right away. They do not recommend stocks or investing strategies, so use the educational tools if you are not experienced enough to decide.

    • 4

Look at the past history of the stock you wish to trade. Check to see if it has had any recent news articles or problems with cash flows. You should ensure that you are making the right choice with your stock trade. Many investors are looking for growth and will hold their purchases for a long time while others are looking for value stocks where they can make a quick buck.

    • 5

Submit a buy order for the amount of stock you wish to buy. TD Ameritrade will purchase the stock for you at the closing price that day. You can log into your account or simply check the value at the end of the day at Yahoo! Finance or a similar finance website. You can also check your remaining balance and possibly trade other stocks at this time.
