How to Prepare Powdered Infant Formula

Powdered formula is the most popular and cost effective of all the formula types. It is easy to prepare and is very convenient for moms who are traveling or leaving their babies in the care of others. Always follow the directions on the formula and never use more water than recommended to dilute the powder. Powdered formulas are not recommended for immunocompromised infants.

Wash your hands thoroughly with hand soap and water before preparing the formula. Dry your hands and make sure that the area you will be preparing the powdered formula in is clean. Check the expiration date on the can of formula to make sure it's still good. Once opened, a can of powdered infant formula is usable for thirty days.

Fill a sterilized bottle with the amount of water recommended on the back of the can. Add the powdered formula using the provided scoop. One level, unpacked scoop of powdered formula should be added for every two ounces of water.

    • 3

Replace the cap of the bottle and shake thoroughly, making sure that all the powder dissolves into the water and there are no chunks gathered at the bottom or sides of the bottle. Once you have prepared the formula, use immediately or store in the refrigerator for no more than 24 hours.
