How to Cut Peony Flowers
The peony is a perennial flowering shrub. Its flowers range from 5 and 7 inches with green foliage. Peony flowers can be cut from the bush and placed in vases or buckets for decorative uses. More peony flowers will grow in the place of the cut flowers. Peony flowers should be cut in the morning. Only about 1/3 of the flowers should be cut from the bush to ensure regrowth. 1
Fill a vase or bucket about 1/3 with cold water. Set it aside.
-
2
Add a packet of plant food to the water, if desired. Plant food is not necessary for the peonies to thrive; however, if plant food is not used, the water in the vase or bucket will need to be changed every few days.

3
Feel each of the buds to determine which are ready to be cut. Flowers ready to be cut should feel like a marshmallow, firm but easy to squeeze gently. If the flower is extremely firm and is impossible to squeeze, then it is not ready to be cut.
-
4
Cut the peony flower, including at least a 12-inch stem. Stems can be as long as desired, but the longer the stem, the less flowers can be cut from the bush to ensure the bush continues to produce flowers.
-
5
Remove any leaves from the stem that will be submersed by the water in the vase or bucket. Leaves left in the water will contaminate it and result in the flowers dying faster.
-
6
Cut about a 1/2-inch of stem off of the bottom. This will allow the plant to take in the amount of water it needs.
-
7
Place the flowers in the vase or bucket of water.
-
8
Change the water in the vase every few days so the peony flowers will last longer. If plant food is used, the water can be changed less.
