How to Clean a Ruger 9mm Auto Pistol
If you collect handguns, either for recreation or self-defense, you are probably familiar with the name Ruger. Founded in 1949, Ruger has been making popular firearms for decades, including 9mm handguns. Useful for sport and defense, a Ruger 9mm should be properly cleaned every time it is used. Failure to keep it clean can lead to misfires and jams when you least expect them.

- 9mm bristle brush
- Gun-cleaning patches
- Solvent
- Gunpowder solvent
- Gun oil

Make sure the gun is unloaded. Point your Ruger in a safe direction and rotate the safety downward until the "S" is fully exposed. Press the magazine latch to eject the magazine. Retract the slide to eject any round that may be in the chamber and visually inspect the chamber to ensure there is no round in there.

Disassemble your Ruger. While most Ruger 9mm handguns can be disassembled in a similar fashion, there may be some variation depending on the age of your gun. Refer to your owner's manual or go to ruger-firearms.com for complete instructions on disassembling your specific Ruger.

Lightly soak a cleaning patch in solvent. Attach it to a cleaning rod and run it through the bore of your Ruger several times.

Lightly soak a bristle brush in solvent and run it through the bore of your Ruger a few times to remove grease or dirt from the bore.

Attach a dry patch to your cleaning rod and run it through the bore to dry up the remaining solvent and clean up any leftover dirt and grease.

Use a patch lightly soaked in a gunpowder solvent remove any gunpowder residue from the chamber and firing mechanism. Follow that with a dry patch to remove any residual gunpowder solvent.

Wipe the entire surface of your Ruger with a clean cloth, and follow that with a patch lightly soaked in oil. Lightly oil the entire gun and reassemble your Ruger.
