Check the color of the spaghetti squash. It should be a buttery yellow to a deep orange color. Usually, the color of a squash will indicate the flavor inside. If a squash is pale yellow it will have a more mild flavor; if the squash is a deep orange then it will probably be nice and sweet.

Check the hardness of the skin on the spaghetti squash. If it is still soft it is probably not ready. You can pick a squash with a softer skin but be sure to let it sit outside to cure, or harden, for a couple days before use.

Check the color of the vine attached to the spaghetti squash. When the vine has turned brown and has shriveled up, it generally is a good indication that the squash is ready to be picked.
