How to Glue a Map to Fabric
Attaching a map to a fabric backing in a common method for extending the life of maps in constant use. A favorite trick among backpackers, a map glued to fabric resists tears, wrinkles and other damage caused by frequent folding and use. To reduce bulk, maps may be glued to both sides of the fabric.
Do not use this technique for preserving historical or otherwise valuable maps, as it can lessen the value of a map in the eyes of a collector.

1
Procure a piece of fabric. Simple cotton fabric works best, although ripstop nylon can be used provided the edges are singed to protect it from unraveling. Avoid denim, as it tends to unravel.
Many people prefer to use dark-colored fabrics to minimize light transmission through the map.
If you carry multiple maps, different colored fabrics will make identification easier.
If you plan on attaching a map to both sides of the fabric, choose a material heavy enough to prevent the details of the map from being visible through the fabric.
-
2
Wash the fabric at least once to remove any sizing (starch) in the fabric. Washing will also shrink the fabric to its final size.

3
Cut the map into panels along its current fold lines. This step is optional. Cutting the map into sections allows all the folding to be done on the fabric only, not the map. This will make the map easier to fold and avoid wear and tear at the fold lines. It's also easier to mount a map to both sides of the fabric if it has been cut.
It's slightly more inconvenient to follow a map cut into sections, but it is usually not onerous to use.

4
Cut the fabric into a panel 6 inches larger than the map in both directions. If you chose to cut the map into panels, add one inch for each cut.
If you plan on mounting a map to both sides, leave additional fabric on the top and left sides of the map sufficient to allow for an extra fold. This will keep the second map covered with fabric after folding.
-
5
Measure and mark the fabric to identify where the map will be attached. Having a rectangle drawn on the fabric will make it easier to avoid wrinkles when gluing.
If you have chosen to cut the map into panels, leave 1/2 inch between panels to allow folding.
-
6
Attach the map to the fabric using a craft glue and following manufacturer's instructions. A sample of this type glue is provided in the resources section.
Work from the center of the map towards the edges to remove wrinkles. Do not stretch the fabric, and rely on outline marks made on the fabric to align the map.
If you have cut the map in panels, keep the fold lines straight to avoid creasing the map when it's stored.

7
Weight the map to promote drying without wrinkles.
Repeat for the second map, if desired, after the first side has completely dried.

Tips & Warnings
Fabric can hold moisture, and mildew can result. Before storing the map for an extended period of time, allow the map to remain unfolded until completely dry.
