Instructions

  1. Hanging a Heavy Bag

    • 1

Choose a location for your heavy bag. The best place is somewhere you can move around, with enough room for the bag to swing. Choosing a place with exposed ceiling joists will also make the installation easier.

    • 2

Locate your ceiling joists. Use a stud finder if the joists are not exposed. Double check the location of the joists by measuring. They should be 16 inches apart in most homes. Locate three adjacent joists.

    • 3

Cut a 2---4 to span across the three joists. Bolt the closed-eye swivel to the 2---4, making sure to use nuts with nylon inserts to prevent them from vibrating off. You should be able to find a closed-eye swivel at a large hardware store, or from some boxing suppliers.

    • 4

Mount the 2---4 to the ceiling joists using lag screws. Drill pilot holes for the lags, and use your socket wrench to drive them in. Use two lag screws in each joist.

    • 5

Hang the heavy bag spring. A jostling and swinging punching bag produces a lot more force than just its own weight. A spring will take some of this shock away from your hardware and joists.

    • 6

Use a shackle to hang your heavy back from your spring. Do not use a quick link or carabiner. These pieces of hardware aren't designed for the kind of strain a heavy bag will produce and may pop open or deform.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you need to adjust the height of your heavy bag, hang a closed-link chain between the swivel and the spring. This will make the bag swing farther, so use caution.

  • Use caution when hanging anything overhead. Improper installation could cause it to fall, causing injury.
