Use a hoof rasp to make a smooth finish on the hoof.

    Tips & Warnings

    • If the hoof is badly shaped from a lack of trimming, work slowly on getting it back into shape. Work on the hoof every day or every other day.

    • If you cut into the quick and it bleeds, wash the hoof and soak it in hydrogen peroxide or another disinfecting solution. Watch for infection.

    • With properly trimmed hooves, your goat should stand flat, with toes even with the end of the foot.

    • Children can clean the hoof with a pick, but all cutting should be done by an adult or young adult.

You must also remember the heel of the foot. Sanders are NOT advisable as posted above. I breed, show, and shear Angora goats and part of my business is foot care for sheep and ALL breeds of goats. Hoofs should be trimmed, in my opinion, from the heel up. It is also easier, and less stress on you and the goat, to put the goat on their side laying on the ground.

Use a belt sander instead of a knife to trim the bottom of the foot. Just be sure to check often and make sure you are not going too far.

You can use a rice root brush on the tender footed goats, or those that have not been clipped.
