How to Make Your Child More Sociable & Play With Other Kids

According to the Journal of Research in Childhood Education, beginning in early childhood, many children will play alone for a variety of reasons. Rejection from other children, voluntarily isolating themselves and shyness may cause a child to be unsociable. Parents of any of these three types of unsociable children can help by using different techniques and strategies, according to each individual child's needs.

Instructions

  1. Helping Your Child Become Sociable

    • 1

To encourage socializing, try putting your child in an after-school activity that he will enjoy. Spend a careful amount of time giving him accurate descriptions of the options he has available. Try to pick an activity that involves a lot of team interaction and play. This will help expose him to other children's more sociable manners and may make him more willing to join in with his friends.

    • 2

Encourage him to invite a friend over for playtime. Children seem to make friends more easily after they have already befriended someone.

    • 3

Practice role playing with your child. Pretend to be another child and have him approach you and ask if you want to play, and what kinds of toys you like. Guiding him through a conversation will allow him to see that it is not as hard as he might think. After a few practices, take him to a local park and have him try it out with another child. Chances are, he will be more confident, and approaching another child will be easier for him.

Make sure that you, as the parent, are promoting his self-esteem. Let him know how important, smart and handsome he is. Vicki L. Schwean and Donald H. Saklofske, authors of the "Psychological Characteristics of Exceptional Children," point out that a child with low self-esteem will isolate himself from other children because he feels that they will automatically reject him. Building his self-esteem will not only help him become more sociable, but will aid him during his developmental stage in life.
