How to Make Green Food Dye

You can make your own natural food dye to add to food. Natural food dye is easy to make by following a simple recipe. After it is made you can add the coloring to your baking recipes or drinks to get that special green effect you seek. It is healthier for you to use homemade green food coloring than manufactured products. Add this to my Recipe Box.

  • Measuring cup
  • Measuring spoon
  • Fresh or frozen pureed spinach or avocado pureed
  • Blender
  • 4 cups of water
  • Medium size pan
  • Scissors
  • Strainer
  • Bowls
  • Baking soda

  1. How to Make Green Food Dye

    • 1

      Take ingredients of your choice and cut up with scissors to prepare for boiling. Measure ingredients in the measuring cup put aside in a small bowl. Use a 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup of pureed spinach or avocado. If using fresh spinach or avocado cut up and puree in blender then remove to a small bowl. Frozen spinach should be defrosted and drained before using.

      Measure four cups of water into a medium sized pan. Add ingredients of pureed spinach or avocado. Bring the mixture to a boil on the stove then reduce the heat and let simmer a few hours.

      Using a strainer strain the liquid from the pan into a container and let it cool. Cover and put the green food dye in the refrigerator until using.

      Use the natural green food coloring by adding small amounts to recipes or ingredients you wish to color green. Use a small measuring spoon or eyedropper to add color. An additional tip is add 1/4 teaspoon baking powder to get more deep green color. Mix the baking soda into the liquid dye and let stand for a few hours.

      Experiment by adding more of the natural dye to your recipes or beverages to get a darker green color. Less for a lighter less intense green color.
