How to Train a Rough Collie Puppy to Fetch

Rough Collies are active herding dogs that enjoy their family and hard work. As a family pet without backyard sheep to herd, the energetic collie will thrive with owners who provide lots of outings and active games. Playing fetch is an excellent game for a collie pup, though you may find that learning to chase a ball is easier for your puppy than bringing it back. Here's an unconventional approach that teaches the "take" and "give" steps first, in a game of fetch.

Instructions

    • 1

Gather a few treats in one hand and a ball in the other. Hold the ball in front of your collie and say, "Take." Praise him when he takes it. This should be a fast and easy step for a collie puppy.

    • 2

When your puppy has the ball in his mouth say, "Give." Gently grab the ball with your free hand and hold a treat in view with the other. Your puppy will likely drop the ball to eat the treat. Practice this step several times before moving on to Step 3.

Practice these skills together, in various places: Place the ball on the ground and say, "Take." When your dog has the ball in his mouth say, "Give." Reward with treats and praise each time he takes and releases the ball.

    • 4

Throw the ball and say, "Take." How far you throw the ball is up to you and your dog. Take smaller steps by throwing or placing the ball closer to you if he ignores your commands. Once your dog has the ball in his mouth, hold out your hand and say, "Give." Reward the puppy with lots of treats and praise when he returns the ball.

Start using the word "Fetch" when you throw the ball once your dog understands the game and plays by your rules of chasing and bringing the ball back. Collies are smart dogs and can learn a new command easily without confusion.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your collie doesn't drop the ball and eat the treat, offer a more tempting treat. Boiled chicken, liver, or cheese works well for most dogs, but try out a variety of rewards to discover which one is your dog's favorite.
