How to Transfer Lease License Plates

All cars driven on American roads must have a license tag on them. Some states do require a plate to be on both the front and back of the vehicle, while most simply ask the plate to be on the rear. If you lease, you probably have a greater vehicle turnover ratio than those who own their vehicle because you change cars more frequently. Did you know that instead of obtaining a new tag each time, you can simply transfer the license plate to your new ride?

Instructions

    • 1

Pick up the "Application for Vehicle Transaction" from your local department of motor vehicles (DMV). This is the form you must fill out before you can transfer the license plate from one car to another.

    • 2

Complete the necessary information on the forms regarding the make model and year of the old and newly leased vehicles.

    • 3

Pay a $15 (as of November 2009) for the plate transfer. Fee may vary from state to state.

    • 4

Have your most recent vehicle registration with you when applying for the license plate transfer. Once the application has been processed you can attach the license plate to the new leased vehicle.
