How to Plant an Italian Plum Tree

Using the shovel, dig a hole as deep as the root ball of the Italian plum tree and twice as wide as the root ball and set aside the soil that has been removed.

Distribute a handful of bonemeal on the bottom of the hole and then place the Italian Plum tree into the hole, with the root ball centered in the hole.

Mix in peat moss to the soil that had been set aside and fill in the hole with the Italian plum tree in it, making sure the pack in the soil firmly all around.

Thoroughly water the tree, soaking the soil around it completely.

Put down a layer of mulch in a 4-foot-diameter circle around the Italian Plum tree to prevent weeds from growing around it.

Tips & Warnings
Select a tree one to two years old from the nursery that you buy the tree from. Trees around that age should have four or five established branches.
Water the Italian plum tree very thoroughly for the first few weeks it is in the ground.
