How to Tie Paracord to a Hiking Stick
Paracord, para cord or parachute cord--no matter what you call it, this strong, light and relatively thin material makes a good emergency supply in the wilderness. If you learn how to tie the paracord on your hiking stick just right, you can also turn it into a convenient, comfortable handle and wrist loop. Having the paracord already on your hiking stick, ready to go, means that it will always be there if you happen to need it in an emergency.

1
Tie the two ends of the paracord together to form it into one big loop. If you don't have a favorite knot for this, trying using a double or triple fisherman's bend (see Resources).
-
2
Pinch the side of the loop together to create a smaller loop big enough to slip your wrist through, with the knot in the center of this smaller loop. Hold the pinched-in part of the largest loop against the hiking stick at the bottom of where you want your handle to be.

3
Wrap the other (non-wrist-loop) end of the cord around and around the hiking stick, working up the stick, taking care to keep each wrap flat and tight against the previous wrap. Stop wrapping once you have only a few inches left to work with.
-
4
Pass the wrist loop you pinched off earlier up through the remaining portion of the loop, then tug the wrist loop back down to cinch the knot tight. Now you have your paracord in case of emergency, a comfortable handle on your hiking stick and a wrist loop.
