How to Donate a Prom Gown

It's a size 2, slathered with sequins and probably never is going to find another occasion fit for so much of the limelight. It's your prom dress, and it's time to give it away. Here's how to spread the shine.

  1. How to Donate a Prom Gown

Locate a specialized non-profit that will take that dress off the hanger for you. DonateMyDress.org, The Ruby Room, The Princess Project, and The Glass Slipper Project are non-profits that collect gently used prom dresses and hold dress drives throughout the country for young women who can't afford new ones. You can locate a dress drop-off center closest to you by visiting DonateMyDress.org.

If you can't find an organization to take your dress, consider a donating to a local clothes recycling store such as Goodwill or The Salvation Army. Come prom season, these stores likely are prime hunting spots for prom queens on the budget prowl.

If handing off your dress to a non-profit or to a store isn't an option, then consider holding a dress drive on your own. You'll need to organize volunteer staff and a space large enough for the dress display and changing space. This could be a great time to partner with local boutiques in your community. A local dress drive will take extra work, but you will reap the rewards of your service and likely will get to see the direct impact of your efforts: You'll be there to see young women beaming who might otherwise stay at home on prom night.

Do unto others. If your dress is torn badly, stained or bears the wrinkles of years stuffed inside a closet, then consider sprucing it up for the next wearer. You wouldn't want to wear just any old thing, and a young woman dreaming about her first prom doesn't want to either. Make effort to get your dress dry cleaned or to sew back on a few of those missing sequins.
