How to Identify a Queen Ant

If you have an ant problem, either in your home or in your lawn, you need to dispose of them as quickly as possible before the ants take over more space. Although taking out the small worker ants helps, you need to identify the queen ants and take them out. The queen ants are the ants that produce all of the baby ants for the colony, so if they are taken out, the entire colony is going to follow. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Look for an ant that is much larger than the rest of the ants. Depending on the species of the ant, the queen ant may be several times larger than any of the worker ants.

    • 2

Watch for a queen with wings. Most queen ants, at some point in their life, have wings that allow them to fly. Worker ants do not have wings, so an ant with wings is most likely a queen ant.

    • 3

Inspect the thorax of the ant (if you are up close). The thorax of the queen is larger and more muscular than a worker ant's thorax; this is due to the queen's once having wings.

    • 4

Cut into the colony nest of the ant farm and try to find the queen. The queens typically stay in the nest and do not venture out very often. They eat what the worker ants bring back, so there is little need to do so.
